A critter guard may help. I don't know which are best. I just have a metal flap that shuts when the venting stops.

@EugestShirley We have the metal flap one now but they can lift that up plus this one was tearing the siding around it. Trying to pull the one we have off.
We'll have to upgrade to the cage one, probably reinforce it under the siding or go so afar under the siding, around the vent hole with mesh wire, like chicken wire.
We had to put cages like this on roof vents. The mesh is actually sharp so it is uncomfortable if they try to pull it out.
We also installed chicken wire like mesh under our eaves, fascia, and soffits and so far up the the roof line to slow them down if they do get under the top layers. It added very little to the overall cost but will slow them down and prevent them from getting in.
UGH!
@ai6yr We've been battling them since 2019. So far, they have done $5000 in damages—lifted shingles and actually chewed and clawed through various places in the roof wood to make attic entry when they couldn't bypass other remediation we have done to keep them at bay.
We deal with one colony and another tries to move into its territory.
I try to take it in stride, like with this animated toon intro, that also contains some of our real life raccoon security footage. It gets exhausting. #PaulsRaccoonWar
