Have you ever wondered why "baker's dozen" means 13 instead of 12?

It's not because bakers are generous — it comes from medieval bakers trying to avoid punishment! Bakers who sold underweight bread could face fines, flogging, and even the pillory.

@grammargirl When i was in public school, a teacher asked if we knew what a baker's dozen was.

No one was answering so volunteered 11 as the answer.

That was the precise moment i learned the answer

I was on to the scamming from a young age it seemed. Never implicitly trust a business.
