Po týdnu s GoToSocial: možná nejjednodušší způsob, jak selfhostovat Fediverse účet.

Mastodon provozujeme už delší dobu. Funguje samozřejmě dobře, ale pro jednouživatelskou instanci je to upřímně trochu moloch.
GoToSocial má jinou filozofii – a je to znát.

Moje instance běží na nejlevnějším VPS od Hetzneru a nedělá tam nic jiného. Zatím to zvládá úplně bez problémů.

Federace funguje jak má.
Mastodon API kompatibilita taky – Phanpy, Tusky i Elk fungují bez problémů.

Kdo je zvyklý na klasické webové rozhraní Mastodonu, tomu může něco chybět.
To v GoToSocial nenajdete.

GtS má jen základní profilovou stránku:

Žádný plnohodnotný webový klient. Prakticky se počítá s používáním přes aplikace.

Pár věcí, které mě příjemně překvapily:

• Migrace postů z Mastodonu včetně médií funguje. U samotného Mastodonu to zatím nejde.
• Výchozí limit pro délku postu je 5000 znaků – žádné hackování konfigurace.
• Remote media cache se čistí automaticky na pozadí (default 7 dní). Není potřeba nic řešit ručně.

Pro koho to je:
pro selfhostery, kteří chtějí být na Fediverse, ale nechtějí řešit složitý provoz serveru. Klidně i na nejslabším VPS.

Pro koho to není:
větší komunity, kde potřebuješ silné moderační nástroje pro více uživatelů.

Zatím spokojenost.

• In fact, Valve even has provisions in place for the unlikely case that they were to fold, with insurance in place to at least provide people DRM-free downloads of their library and backups for a time.
  • By contrast: I'm pretty shure everyone who blew money on #UbisoftQuartz got 100% shafted…

And that's how a (non-public) corporation gets loved by it's customers: By not being an asshole!

• But apparently that's too much to ask from #EA, #Ubisoft or even #EpicGames, who (despite having the ability to change it!) actively choose to disregard said lessions and be openly hostile towards paying #Gamers, espechally those #LinuxGamers.
  • Not that #Valve are #OpenSource champions, far from it. They merely knew with #Windows8Bing & #Windows10S that neither #Microsoft nor #Apple are their "friends" or "allies" and that they need to be independent from both if they want to survive.

In the end, not #Steam is deciding if, where and when someone buys a #Game, but they shure as hell know how to be a nice store people enjoy to shop and browse...

Cupertino v0.10 — my AI documentation server now indexes all 307 Apple frameworks. 302,424 pages.

Found 5 bugs in the crawler. Best one: it was only discovering ~20 frameworks from Apple's
homepage. Fed it Apple's own technologies.json and the whole library opened up. Even
OpenGLES. Deprecated, but completionism has no room for judgment.

First community contributions too. Feels good.

I needed a reverse web proxy for a personal project.

Instead of installing nginx or traefik… I wondered:
“How hard would it be to write one in Go?”

So I tried.

~800 lines of code later, I had a configurable web server + reverse proxy with everything defined in a JSON file.

No external packages.
No dependencies.
Just a single 13 MB binary.

Out of curiosity I ran an SSL Labs test on it — it scored **96 with an A+ rating**.

And the real test: it’s now running in production, serving my transactional site and cloud portal.
