If you're running your own Mastodon server and you're still on a pre-4.5 version, you might want to update to the latest version (4.5.5).
The "fetch all replies" feature introduced in 4.5 means you see all the replies in threads no matter which server you're viewing from, no matter how large or small your server is. This makes cross-server interactions much easier.
How much more storage do you think will be needed for all of the servers to have copies of all of the posts? Maybe that will make the costs much higher for some of the small/medium size servers? I wonder how many Mastodon servers keep every post forever vs keeping something like a couple of years of posts
