The plurals of words that end in "o" are weird. Why is it "tomatoes" but "photos"? "Potatoes" but "pianos"?

I always thought there must be a rule, but there are SO MANY exceptions!

The guideline is to add "-es" after a consonant + "o" and "-s" after a vowel + "o." But "photos" breaks the rule.

@grammargirl But then "photos" is an abbreviation for "photographs", so the exception is understandable ...
