You wouldn't host your community in a casino.

Addictive algorithms, amplified hateful content, doomscrolling. It's time to call social media what it is: dangerous.

As a society, we need to work harder to detangle ourselves from these places and the behaviour they encourage.

How are you creating distance between yourself and harmful social media?

@newsmast I never found social media to be harmful. When I was on Facebook, I saw the content of my friends and nothing else, just as I do here when I switch to my Notifications timeline. I stopped using it in October of 2024 because they shut down the Basic Mobile site and their main site and apps are very inaccessible with screen readers. I heard, afterward, that they started doing various things, but I didn't pay much attention to it because I no longer used the platform. I remain on Mastodon because it is accessible. I also love Dreamwidth for the same reason and because it is a completely different type of platform, meant for keeping a journal and making friends.

@newsmast How to stay of harmfull (anti-)social media is an interesting question, but I’m unsure if I can contribute or not.

Except for short stints on LJ and Tumbler I’ve never really contributed material (i.e. worked for free) to anything of the big ones.

As for shallow consumption I’ve had an unhealthy relationship to YouTube for years, but sometime late last fall I decided to just drop it, and so far that’s been easier than I thought it’d be.
