@cory maybe you know about it already, but have you checked topgrade for your updates? I used to have an alias like yours, but I happily switched when I found it

@cory When I was running Gentoo Linux a while back I used to pin things sometimes because a package would make it upstream that would break upgrades for a while. Also, I know the frameworks like PHP can be a pain when they reach the update channel....
