No matter how much I try to rationalize, my conscience will no longer allow me to try to justify personally buying and using computers running Windows 11 or MacOS, phones running iOS or “Googled” Android, or using products and services provided by other Big Tech companies.
I have seen what these companies do and what they are capable of. Much good has been done and can be done with the technologies they provide, but giving up our freedom to choose is not going to end well for us.
Free alternatives are generally less convenient and you have to be your own tech support or rely on good people to help you, but if that means independence from large corporations that are obsessed with profit and willing to exploit, surveil, control, and oppress their own customers to get it, it is absolutely worth the hassle and inconvenience of breaking away from them.
Much good can be done and is being done with free, open, decentralized technologies without sacrificing freedom.
I will do my best to document and my journey away from Big Tech. Complete independence may not be possible (I use Google Fiber because the only other alternatives where I live are Comcast and Centurylink which are much worse), but I will try.
