@MediaRevolution Good move by Erewash Borough Council! Local authorities really don't need to use platforms like X to talk to their relatively small and mainly local audiences - especially when there are excellent alternatives.

I have emailed various council members asking for more details and if I can help in demoing how "The Fediverse" works

I did try and get my local council to move a while ago, and sent a similar email, but they weren't interested, although at least they replied....
Erewash is the next district over from me.

I read the BBC news article about you leaving Twitter (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0kee6xjzv2o) with interest.
Although I am not in Erewash, but Derby North, I commend you for taking a stance against the mess that Twitter now is.
Unfortunately I can't find the minutes of your meeting discussing this topic, but I would be interested in knowing what alternatives you were thinking of.
I have disliked most mainstream social media sites for multiple reasons, but recently investigated a system people call "The Fediverse", which is a "web standards"-following network of multiple servers and services, which is decentralised and which anyone can run if they feel like it.
I use and run several services myself for fun and friends, and it seems very stable and innovative.
There are various services which emulate the usual centralised services - "Mastodon" is like Twitter, "Pixelfed" is like Instagram, and "PeerTube" is like Youtube, for example, but unlike the mainstream equivalents, they are all interoperable with each other (like email), and easy to choose or move between servers if you don't like particular rules.

I would like to point out that while BlueSky says it is "decentralised", there are still central points of failure, which mean it is not truly decentralised, and at some point VCs will want their money back, which could change how the system works.
With "The Fediverse", while you wouldn't necessarily need to (as you could join any of several thousand available), you could set up a system just for the council and council members.
If you would like more information about how it works, I would be happy to give demos of how it works.
