The origins of the
GENOCIDE LIBEL
Nazi-Islamist (1930s-1940s): The genocide libel is seeded when European antisemitism-especially Nazism-is adapted in parts of the Arab world during the late Mandate period. Nazi-Arab propaganda recasts a continuous Jewish presence and the return of Jewish refugees to their ancestral homeland as a nefarious, conspiratorial project imposed by Western powers and aimed at destroying Arab society.
Soviet (1960s-1980s): After 1967, the Soviet Union formalizes this narrative through state propaganda, recoding older anti-Jewish tropes in Marxist-Leninist language. It defines "Zionism" as colonial, racist, and fascist, and inverts Holocaust memory to cast Jews as
"Nazis." Through UN forums and later the Durban process, this template enters global antiracist and "human rights" discourse, detached from events and normalized beyond the Cold War.
Western (2000s-present): Western academics and activists advance the genocide libel by redefining genocide through settler-colonial theory, drawing on Australian white-guilt discourse. They shift genocide from a crime requiring intent into a presumed structural condition. Applied to Israel, this recasts "Zionism" as inherently genocidal, turning genocide into a standing moral verdict that long predates October 7, with wars serving only to reaffirm an assumed conclusion.
