ok. So #DeltaChat is coming along with call support it seems.

So... now I gotta wonder.
If DeltaChat ticks that box, then... it is on par with #XMPP ( #ejabberd ) for my needs.
And deltaChat ALSO builds on top of well-known, mature, stable protocols (a-la email!).
For both:
- I can own the server, the storage.
- I have encryption.
- I have 1to1 chats, I have group chats.
- I can share files.
- I have mobile clients, I have desktop clients
What the heck would be the deciding factor here???
I can run both, but damn, why double up on the admin?

Reading some more #eJabberd docs...

So far calling clients that are not on the same LAN is not working. You can call, but the call can not be connected.
Made some more changes just now (port forwards, docker ports), have to wait for fam to get back before I can try again (need more devices!)

From the docs:
"The IPv4 address advertised by your TURN server. The address should not be NAT’ed or firewalled."
So. Ok. MAYBE I can get away with only STUN active. Maybe.
But afaik TURN is needed if STUN fails. Which sounds like a real possibility.
Context: I'm trying to run this all behind my NATed home connection.
Cause I'm a #Selfhosting punk. Rules are for chumps! (and people who want things to WORK, but screw those guys!).
Better get back to the day job first. Probably.

*sigh* so looks like #CoTurn does not really want you to use it with #eJabberd ( see https://landchad.net/coturn/ ).
In addition, dynamic FTTH external IP addresses are apparently not simpatico with the required TURN/STUN setup - seems you need all kinds of haxery to detect external IP changes, modify the ejabberd config, and then RESTART the beast, cause apparently reload_config is not currently enough.
FWIW, as far as I could glean, CoTurn would also need some massaging when the external IP changes.
Disclaimer: I might be missing information still!
