I am looking to host a **de-federated** mastodon instance for 300 to 500 people.
I wanted to know what kind server specs I should go for for this kind of project. should I go for 8gb or 4gb of RAM, roughly how many vCPUs/threads, etc..

So I've set remote content retention to 356 days. Given that it look 14 months to reach 2GB I'm hoping that this will allow the cache size to perpetually hover under that. I'm obviously happy to pay for hosting, but I don't think it worth me paying more just for that. #Mastodon #SelfHosting (And I know it's not strictly that #).

@mosgaard you're all missing the simple and obvious. *Every* Linux File Browser *already* has built-in support to connect to a remote SFTP share (the remote #linux box needs the "openssh-server" installed).
It goes almost full wire speed, even on tiny files. Beats SMB for speed. I use this heavily in my home lab. For example in KDE Dolphin: "Network": icon on left - > "Add Network Folder" button in the upper right - > "Secure shell (ssh)" radio button.

Not sure why I did this, but ejabberd works fine on my gen 1 raspberry pi (14 years old, 512mb RAM). Would probably enough to handle a small instance for friends and family.
