What happened to Greg Ray?
You might have noticed that Greg has vanished from Facebook. Meta's Al bots suspended his account
after he advertised a number of free furniture items on Marketplace. Apparently the Al bots thought
the ads didn't "follow community standards on account integrity”. He has 180 days to appeal, but has
to upload a selfie video before he can even begin. Given that Facebook had already, some years ago,
required his account to be formally "Verified" - on the basis that as a former journalist he might be
able to sway people's opinions, at this stage Greg can't be bothered giving Facebook even more data
or jumping through the hoops the company’s Al bots want him to. He reckons Meta is a wicked, ugly,
lying, spying, fascism-enabling corporation anyway.
So it's goodbye from Greg for the time being. He wants to thank everybody in the Rediscovered
Newcastle Community for their friendship and engagement over the years.
He plans to explore alternatives to at least partly rebuild this community outside Facebook's walled
garden and would really appreciate some of the regulars here contacting him by email. He hopes they
will still help him figure out some of the tougher photo and history puzzles he encounters.
You can still find him at his phototimetunnel website, which I'd better not link because in the past
Facebook hasn't tolerated that.
