Now I instantly had some hashtag relay account retoot this. That’s crap. Don’t run that kind of accounts, they spam the tooter‘s notifications. I’ll block them away when I see them. We need a real solution.

Looking into #gotosocial again which is a great piece of software.

The thing with super small instances (regardless if it’s #mastodon or gts) is this: As log as following hashtags and still getting content from other instances isn’t solved, small instances are basically useless and I need to be on a large instance.

This needs a solution, not workarounds.

This #gotosocial instance has been successfully migrated to a new VPS running #nixos, with distributed backups powered by #restic and #syncthing, together with remote backups powered Hetzner S3 storage.

I love so much how NixOS lets me just write what's essentially an IaC definition for a machine, so it just works without any issues. And if I forget how I set everything up, I can just look at the code.

I'm always surprised by the sheer size of backups - this time 15GB (ugh!) broken down as follows (from biggest to smallest):

#GoToSocial: 6.2 GB
#PeerTube: 4.3 GB
#NextCloud: 3.0 GB
#Pixelfed: 1.5 GB
#LinkStack: 91 MB

I'm brainstorming ways to make my GoToSocial backup size go down... I have cache set to 1 day only, so I'm trying unfollowing a few accounts (that I already follow from my Mastodon profile) to see if that makes a difference.
