I've looked at apple grinders, but decided to do it by hand for two reasons.

One, my apples are coddling-moth infested. Slicing them into a bunch of pieces let me cut out and discard the mothy-bits, it any. I don't want to eat live bug juice, and I want to eat bug-shit even less.

Two, cost. I had a 2x4 and a bucket laying around. It takes about 5min hard work to mash up a bucket of apple bits. Would a grinder do better? Yes. Do I have so many apples I don't care? Also yes.
